New home wanted for young dancers

One Edmonton dancer is battling for a space to share hip-hop culture with children and teens.

After losing a longtime practice space at the U of A, Angela Gladue is trying to establish a permanent home where youth can use dance as a positive creative outlet.

“It is needed. It is like family so you always have a place to go,” said Gladue.

Gladue, also known in the hip-hop community as B-girl Lunacee, has noticed a need for classes like Cypher Sundaes, teaching the history and different styles of hip hop.

“It is something for them to look forward to,” said Gladue.

“It can help them in their lives.”

Gladue, with a background in aboriginal and hip-hop dance, said programs like these helped her through her childhood.

Currently, she is operating her classes out of the gallery space at the Sun and Moon Visionaries Gallery and Studio at 10125–97 Ave. Sun and Moon is a non-profit organization that promotes aboriginal arts and culture.

By holding these Sunday drop-in classes, Gladue is hoping to raise money to develop a dance studio to give people in the community a place to go.

“We have been given a space but there is no funding to develop it,” said Gladue.
