New immigrant welcomes B.C.’s 1st baby of ’09

B.C.’s first baby of 2009 was born about three minutes after midnight to a landed immigrant in Abbotsford whose husband is still in India.

The healthy baby boy, born weighing six pounds, five ounces, will be named during a religious naming ceremony at a Sikh temple, likely sometime Friday, when the baby and mother are released from hospital.

“This is a really big deal for me,” said Navdeep Sandhu, 21, a first-time mother whose husband, Gurmukh Ghag, is in India waiting to come to Canada. “I want to share it with my husband.”

Sandhu, who married last December and came to Canada in April, was due Jan. 7. Her husband wasn’t even aware that she went into labour until she called him — after the baby was born. She said he was surprised and excited.

Sandhu’s older sister Navneet was in the delivery room for the birth and various family members, including her brother and grandparents, were at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre on Thursday.

Vancouver’s first baby, Desmond McKay, was born about 12 minutes after midnight at B.C. Women’s Hospital.
