New life prescribed for vacant pharmacy

Lonely and forlorn, the Connaught Pharmacy cast a shadow for many years over thousands of cars streaming by on Chebucto Road.

But the brick building will soon see new life.

After a brief stint as a hair salon, the pharmacy building was rezoned and the owner, Denise Deveau, is renovating it into office space. Construction work will take between six to eight months.

But several neighbours aren’t crazy about the idea.

“I’m not sure if the businesses are going to be helpful to the neighbourhood or not, but having a business on that busy corner is not good planning,” said Wendy Bird, a 25-year resident in the area, who is worried about the traffic.

The building, which opened as a pharmacy with a residence on the second floor in 1952, will be renovated and a two-storey addition will be added.

“We understand there’s a commercial business going into the property but I’m not at liberty to say what the business is,” said Shaune MacKinlay, HRM spokeswoman.

She added that it’s not a pharmacy.
