New LRT pushes centre’s move

Construction of a new downtown LRT station may have been the final push behind relocating Calgary’s Kerby Centre.

After nearly 40 years at its 7 Avenue SW location, the seniors’ centre will be changing locations, due in part to the new LRT station slated to be built on the same street, according to the centre.

The seniors’ centre offers programs for those 55 and older, and some are concerned the new LRT location could present a sense of fear for the seniors.

The relocation is also based on a need for serious repairs to the building and the city’s rising senior population, said the centre’s CEO, Luanne Whitmarsh.

“We’re not leaving unhappy, we’re just leaving knowing that what we currently have is no longer a fit for our goal-forward plan,” she said.

The Kerby Centre won’t relocate for at least five more years, according to Whitmarsh.
