How often do you stand in front of your closet and think “I have nothing to wear?”


If you’re like most of us, you probably resort to a few outfits that you wear a lot and a reach past that big bunch of clothes that rarely see the light of day.


We’ve going hardcore on your closet, but with some friendly handholding from our fashion guru, David Clemmer.


He suggests you start by taking everything out of your closet. Then get ready to model all these clothes in front of a full-length mirror.

“It’s a good idea to invite over a stylish friend who can give you a second opinion and who’s not afraid to tell you the truth about how you look.”

Put on a neutral colored T-shirt and try on every skirt and every pair of pants.

“If you can’t do something up without major suffering, get rid of it. If it has baggy, saggy parts and doesn’t look good on you, put it in a discard pile.”

The tops are next. Put on a pair of jeans or neutral khakis and try on your tops one at a time. David says, “if they’re stretched out of shape and in danger of causing a wardrobe malfunction … if they’ve shrunk and leave your belly hanging out … or if they’re so tight that the buttons threaten to pop, say bye- bye to them.”

Also keep a close eye on the colours, patterns and fabrics. Some tops that looked great on the models in the store display may be wrong for your skin tone or body type. They’ve got to go.

Now it’s time to see how everything goes together. Try on your pieces again, but this time with an eye to assembling complete outfits right down to the shoes. Maybe you’ll surprise yourself and discover pieces that look great together. Pull out that great item that you never seem to wear and see if you can make it work with what you’ve got.

You’ll discover what’s missing from your wardrobe … maybe a great pair of pants with no suitable tops, or a group of tops that need a special bra.

Make a list of everything you’re missing in a notebook. Now look at all the clothes hanging in your closet and see if there’s too much of one thing and not enough of another … not enough skirts, too much black, not enough prints. Add this information to your notebook.

Now you should have a clear idea of what you really need, and what you don’t. Take the pile of discards, stuff them into a bag and donate them to a nearby charity. Then shine up your credit card, take your list and head to your favourite store for some smart shopping. You’ll find pieces that can fill the gaps in your wardrobe, and maybe help you show off some of your favourite outfits in a stylish new way.

Keep your notebook handy every time you go shopping. This way you can keep your closet under control and be sure you’re getting what you really need.
