New plan for green energy producers

Nova Scotia Power filed a proposal with the province’s utility regulator yesterday to expand its net metering program.

Nova Scotia Power filed a proposal with the province’s utility regulator yesterday to expand its net metering program.

Net metering allows customers that generate their own renewable energy to use that energy to cut back on their power bills. According to NSPI, more than 80 residential and commercial customers participate in the program, offered since 1989.

If the application is approved by the Utility and Review Board, however, customers would be eligible to sell surplus energy to NSPI.

The energy company was compelled to file plans for an enhanced net metering program by yesterday, thanks to amendments to the Electricity Act approved by the government earlier this year.
