Media reports suggest the City of Edmonton is looking at spending $3.4 million over the next two years to test automated stop announcements in transit buses.
The project would involve 50 buses, which will test automated vehicle location, a traveler information system, computer-aided dispatch and security cameras.
The equipment is already being used in Winnipeg, Ottawa and Toronto and one benefit is meant to help disabled groups as they attempt to navigate the city while using public transportation.
Edmonton bus passengers can already find bus schedules via their smart phones.
