Nicholson shatters women’s Blue Nose record

Jen Nicholson returned to her roots Sunday and ran her way into the Blue Nose Marathon record books.

The Cornwall, P.E.I., resident blew away Leah Jabbour’s Blue Nose record by more than 13 minutes on Sunday, breaking the tape in the 42.2-kilometre race in 3:00:07.

The 40-year-old stay-at-home mother of three is originally from Halifax and got her start as a runner here.

“When I went through Point Pleasant Park, I had flashbacks to when I was a kid, running cross-country races,” she said, smiling widely. “It was a nice course. It was fun.”

Nicholson, a teacher by trade, moved away from Halifax in junior high school. Her children, aged two, six and nine, and husband, Brent, were at the finish line to congratulate her.

The Acadia grad started getting serious about running in the mid-1990s and has now run four marathons.

“I was in and out of it, but 15 years ago, I started getting back into it,” she said. “It’s always been part of my life.”

Jabbour, a two-time winner who is from Clayton Park, set the previous record in 2007 in 3:13:08.
