Nickelback leads Junos – Metro US

Nickelback leads Junos

Nickelback is feeling the Juno love.

The Alberta rockers are on top with nominations for five Juno Awards, including the Juno fan choice award, single of the year for Gotta Be Somebody and album of the year for Dark Horse. The nominees for Canada’s highest prize in music were announced at a press conference at the Royal York Hotel yesterday. The winners will be announced at the 2009 Juno Awards, set to take place on March 29 in Vancouver and broadcast live on CTV.

Pickering, Ont., singer-songwriter Sarah Slean and members of The Stills and Saint Alvia were on-hand to unveil the contenders, along with comedian and last year’s host Russell Peters, who was cracking jokes about the gala he returns to host this year.

“It’s Vancouver. What can I say?” he said. “That’s the city it’s going to be in and Vancouver’s one of those cities where you can pretty much have a good time without the Juno Awards. You add Junos into that and the whores will be flying.”

Performers at the show include Montreal pop-punks Simple Plan, Nickelback, City And Colour and Vancouver singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan.

Other Canadian artists were also tipped for multiple nominations. Montreal singer-songwriter Sam Roberts earned four nods, including artist of the year, rock album of the year for Love At The End Of The World, and two nominations for video of the year for Detroit ’67 and Them Kids. Celine Dion has three nominations (Juno fan choice, single of the year for Taking Chances and music DVD of the year for Live In Las Vegas — A New Day) along with Burnaby, B.C., rockers Hedley (Juno fan choice, album of the year for Famous Last Words and songwriter of the year).

“This year’s extensive list of nominees reflects the sensational cross-section of musical talent from across our country,” said Melanie Berry, president of The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS). “Canadian music is dominated by the highest quality musical standards and is renowned for its variety … Nothing is more uniting than music. Music is the universal language.”
