Aaron Nickerson of River Hills has the early lead at the Nova Scotia Golf Association’s men’s amateur championship at the Osprey Ridge Golf Club in Bridgewater.
Nickerson, a Clarks Harbour native, shot an opening-round 4-under 68 yesterday and holds a two-stroke lead over Abercrombie’s Brian Affleck and Oakfield’s Geoff Campbell. Both were 2-under 70 on the 6,607-yard layout.
The 39-year-old Nickerson captured last year’s mid-amateur crown but is seeking his first win at the amateur.
Ashburn’s Glenn Robinson and Ken-Wo’s Ally Tidcombe were 1-under par to round out the top five.
Second-round action gets underway today at 7:30 a.m.
At the Grandview Golf and Country Club in Westphal, Ken-Wo’s Laura Harris of New Minas has a whopping 10-stroke lead at the women’s amateur after opening day.
Harris, who won the tournament in 2004 and 2007, fired a 3-over 75 to put her well in front of the 19-player field. Defending champion Mirielle LeBlanc of Clare is second after going 13-over 85. Ashburn’s Cathy Donald is third at 86.
Harris is coming off her junior year at Illinois State. She was named to the NCAA Division I all-American scholar team, posting three top-20 finishes and a stroke average of 78.5.
