‘Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies’

Console: Nintendo DS

Company: Nintendo/Square Enix

Grade: ?????

The release of a new Dragon Quest game is like a national holiday in Japan. Lines form around every retail outlet. People cry. It’s a lot like when Apple does just about anything over here. Still, this series has found only moderate success on these shores. Nintendo is set to change all of that with “Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies,” the franchise’s most accessible entry to date.

To the uninitiated, Dragon Quest titles are old-school turn-based RPGs. (Think a simpler, more charming “Final Fantasy.”) The mechanics have barely changed since their inception in 1989, and you know what, that’s a good thing. There is something about this series that is sort of like curling up with hot cocoa and your favorite movie.

All in all, it’s hard not to like this game. The storyline is charming, the graphics are some of the best on the DS, and the game-play is tried and true.
