No injuries in two-alarm blaze, says firefighter

Crews were still putting out hot spots when Amahrey Nixon first arrived on scene to find her home on fire.

“We just moved in to the apartment this year,” she said. “I don’t really know what’s going on.”

Nixon said she was devastated to find out that her apartment building was on fire. She said she had a lot of personal belongings in her suite and she hopes it wasn’t damaged by the two-alarm blaze.

Firefighters responded to the apartment fire on the northwest corner of 107 Avenue and 116 Street at 11:40 a.m.

“The building was evacuated and there are no reported injuries,” said Tim Wilson, a spokesperson for Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services, adding animals were rescued from the burning building, including a pet snake that firefighters carried out in a gift bag.

Wilson couldn’t say when residents would be allowed into their homes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
