Nova Scotia’s fisheries minister says it’s not yet clear whether an oil spill near a river caused the death of 500,000 young salmon.

Sterling Belliveau said Thursday he just learned that up to $900,000 worth of salmon fry from an aquaculture farm were found dead in Barneys River.

But he said officials are still analyzing data to determine whether the spill or something else caused the deaths. A two-vehicle crash involving a tanker truck on Aug. 18 released part of a 38,000-litre load of waste oil into the river, east of New Glasgow. The two drivers were killed.
