Two of the three teams contending for supremacy in the NHL’s Northwest Division are trying to pry a veteran from the Florida Panthers before next Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Sources have told Metro the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames are making strong trade pitches to the Florida Panthers for left winger Martin Gelinas, one of about a dozen players in their 30s and 40s who likely will be dealt before the deadline.
Another is Edmonton Oilers star Ryan Smyth.
