Rodarte just dropped the mic on fashion week. After last season’s esoteric tribute to “Star Wars” — really, how many women would wear a gown emblazoned with a giant Luke Skywalker? — sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s dazzling spring outing mixed the right amount of fantasy with commercial appeal.

The show opened with a series of ruffled chiffon blouses paired with skinny, skinny high-waisted jeans or skirts constructed with a mish-mash of denim, knit and netting. Cool, boxy anoraks — some embellished with net, others with paillettes — topped the looks. But that was just the warm-up.The sisters’ talent for cutting and pasting couture elements (hand-embroidered lace, sequins and crystals) until they create a breathtaking one-of-a-kind collage crescendoed into a series of sparkling gowns in seafoam, aqua and navy, inspired by tide pools they visited as children.

The show’s dreamlike backdrop brought to mind another iconic ’80s film: “The Never Ending Story” — these ladies definitely hold onto Fantasia.
