Odd man out must sit for Mooseheads

The Halifax Mooseheads are planning to sit a 20-year-old in the stands on the weekend.

The Mooseheads, who host the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Friday and the Bathurst Titan on Saturday, are expected to go with 20-year-old Peter Delmas in goal along with 17-year-old Anthony Terenzio.

The Mooseheads’ third goalie, 19-year-old Mathieu Corbeil, will be away with the Columbus Blue Jackets at an NHL rookie tournament in Traverse City, Mich.

Because Delmas is an over-ager, one of the club’s three other 20-year-olds — forwards Gerrad Grant and Charles Bety and defenceman Pascal Amyot — will be a scratch. League rules allow only three 20-year-olds to dress per team.

“It’s a situation we don’t have any choice in with one of our goalies going away to camp,” Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell said. “We have four 20s we’re very happy with right now and we have some tough decisions to make.”

Delmas, who leaves for a tryout with the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 13, is on the trade block and is expected to be moved if he doesn’t sign an NHL contract.

Also away with NHL teams this weekend are defencemen Konrad Abeltshauser, with the San Jose Sharks, and Sawyer Hannay, with the Vancouver Canucks, leaving the Mooseheads with just six available blue-liners.

That would indicate Bety will be the odd man out up front, with Grant solidly entrenched as a top-line forward.
