An off-duty officer is being credited with stopping a thief at a north-end business.
The officer and a family member were at the business near 97 Avenue and 182 Street at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Police say the pair saw a suspicious man enter and steal a large donation jar for diabetes research near the front.
The off-duty officer confronted the man and managed to grab the jar away from him.
The suspect became aggressive, police say, taking a swing at the officer and threatening to stab him. The suspect then fled on foot.
The officer followed at a distance until the suspect entered a house a few blocks away. He then phoned police.
On-duty officers arrived and a 31-year-old man was arrested without incident.
He's been charged with theft under $5,000, assault and uttering threats.
