Off-duty police officially charged with alleged assault

Two off-duty metro Vancouver police officers have officially been charged in connection with an alleged assault on a newspaper deliveryman.

New Westminster Const. Jeffrey Roger Klassen has been charged with assault, while West Vancouver Const. Griffin Gillan faces robbery charges.

Police also recommended a charge of possession of stolen property against Klassen, but it was not approved by the Crown, Vancouver police Const. Tim Fanning said yesterday.

A third officer from Delta who was implicated in the alleged assault was not indicted because police didn’t have enough evidence against him.

The men have been accused of robbing and assaulting Firoz Khan outside the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver on Jan. 21.

Khan alleges one of the men also shouted racial slurs at him, but wasn’t able to identify who it was.

Klassen and Gillan are due to appear in court in Vancouver on Feb. 9.
