Officer facing assault charge gets desk job

Administrative duties have been assigned to a veteran of the Calgary police while he faces an assault charge.

The charge stems from an incident on March 18, 2009 in which the unnamed officer patrolling alone allegedly physically assaulted a woman while trying to bring her into custody, according to deputy chief Al Redford.

“It’s always disappointing to us when these things occur, but we are thankful we have authorities we answer to under the law. Our officers are no different than any other citizens in that regard, Redford said.

The Edmonton Crown prosecutor’s office recommended a charge be levied in the case where the officer was trying to get the intoxicated woman home before responding to a high priority police-involved shooting that night.
