A Halifax Regional Police officer already charged with extortion is now facing a drug charge.
Police say they seized a quantity of marijuana from Const. Jeffrey Buchanan’s home on Dec. 12 during a search linked to an extortion investigation.
This past Friday, police charged Buchanan with one count of drug possession, adding to earlier charges of extortion and breach of trust.

In December, a judge ordered Buchanan to have no contact with two convicted drug dealers. Court documents show Buchanan is alleged to have tried to extort $5,100 from Shawn Kenneth Banfield while he was on duty.
Buchanan has been released on $15,000 bail and is scheduled to appear on all charges in Halifax Provincial Court on Jan. 26. He has been suspended form his duties, but is eligible to receive pay for at least 60 days.
