A 28-year veteran OPP officer at the centre of a justice corruption scandal met with Canada’s “Mafia godfather” and then lied about it to his superiors, according to allegations levelled against him by the police force.

Mike Rutigliano made a brief appearance at a disciplinary hearing at Ontario Provincial Police headquarters yesterday to face a discreditable conduct charge under the Police Services Act.

The charge relates to a 2002 meeting in Montreal that Rutigliano “arranged and attended with members and associates of the Rizzuto traditional crime group, regarding a jewelry store in Woodbridge, Ontario,” say the particulars of the allegations.

Vito Rizzuto is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States in connection with gangland killings.
