OHL Roundup: A look at Friday’s games

Ottawa 67’s forward Tyler Toffoli may be leading the league in scoring, but that doesn’t mean you can forget about his teammate Shane Prince.

Prince had a goal and two assists as the 67’s defeated the visiting Sarnia Sting 5-2 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League action.

The fourth-year forward now has nine goals and 19 points in his last nine games, giving him a total of 26 goals and 61 points in 37 games this season.

Mike Cazzola also scored a goal and set up two more for the 67’s (30-11-5), who have won now five straight. Toffoli scored his league-leading 37th goal of the season while Taylor Fielding and Cody Ceci added the others.

Nail Yakupov extended his scoring streak to seven games with a goal for the Sting (23-19-5), who have now dropped three in a row. Ryan Spooner scored the other.

Petr Mrazek made 40 saves for the win while JP Anderson turned away 34 shots in defeat.

Ottawa went 1 for 3 on the power play as Sarnia failed to score on either of their opportunities with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Barrie 6, Brampton 2; Guelph 3, Niagara 0; Kingston 2, Oshawa 1 (OT); Kitchener 5, Owen Sound 4; London 5, Windsor 2; Mississauga 3, Peterborough 2; Sault Ste. Marie 3, Erie 1 and Plymouth 6, Sudbury 5 (OT).

At Ottawa, after a scoreless first period, the 67’s jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second.

Fielding scored at 2:45 and then it was Toffoli at 13:05.

Spooner cut the lead in half for the Sting at 17:21, making it a one-goal game heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

Ceci scored on the power play at 11:49, but again Sarnia chipped away at the lead when Yakupov scores less than two minutes later.

Prince scored for Ottawa at 14:19 and Cazzola secured a 67’s victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute of the game.

At Brampton, Ont., Tanner Pearson scored two goals and Mathias Niederberger made 40 as Barrie (25-19-3) picked up its first win in three outings by defeating the Battalion (26-12-9).

Storm 3 IceDogs 0

At Guelph, Ont., Garret Sparks made 37 saves and Jason Dickinson had a goal and an assist as the Storm (20-19-5) blanked Niagara (29-15-3).

Frontenacs 2 Generals 1 (OT)

At Kingston, Ont., Cody Alcock scored the winning goal 3:30 into overtime and Igor Bobkov made 34 saves for the game’s first star as the Frontenacs (14-30-4) edged Oshawa (21-21-5).

Rangers 5 Attack 4

At Kitchener, Ont., Tobias Rieder’s power-play goal with 22.9 seconds left in the third period lifted the Rangers (32-13-1) over Owen Sound (22-19-6).

Knights 5 Spitfires 2

At London, Ont., Greg McKegg had a goal and two assists as the Knights (36-10-1) defeated Windsor (21-23-5).

Majors 3 Petes 2

At Mississauga, Ont., Brett Foy scored a goal and set up one more as the Majors (22-19-6) edged Peterborough (22-20-6).

Greyhounds 3 Otters 1

At Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Nick Cousins scored twice as the Greyhounds (20-24-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over Erie (5-37-4).

Whalers 6 Wolves 5 (OT)

At Sudbury, Ont., J.T. Miller scored two goals, including the winner in overtime, and set up one more as Plymouth (33-12-3) won its third straight by defeating Sudbury (24-16-4).
