Old support, newcomers hit the streets to fight diabetes

A new venue attracted old supporters and many first-timers to yesterday’s 2010 TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes.

Rita Thodos, regional manager for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, said the event was moved to Queen Elizabeth Park this year to accommodate the increasing number of participants.

She estimates that as many as 4,000 people took part.

“This is a great turnout,” Thodos said. “Its’ been lots of fun for the kids with activities, food and the walk itself.”

The goal was to raise $650,000 for research into Type 1 diabetes.

Last year’s top fundraising team, Jack Of Hearts, named after a child diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age five, were recognized for their efforts.
