Olympic bell provider concerned over competing item

A B.C. company that’s inked a licensing deal with Vancouver Games organizers to provide official Olympic bear bells is ringing the alarm after one of the 2010 host First Nations unveiled a similar item.

Vancouver-based RC Products has signed on to supply articles like bells, keychains, wallets and bags for the 2010 Games.

But president Rory Carr says he’s concerned promotional bear bells that have been unveiled by the Squamish First Nation and Spirit of B.C. Committee could hurt sales.

Carr says RC Products has already sold 5,000 of its bear bells and had hoped to sell another 10,000 before the first nation and committee unveiled theirs.

The Squamish nation and the provincially sponsored tourism committee say 12,000 of their bells will be sold on Vancouver’s North Shore, with a portion of the proceeds going to a bear-awareness society.
