One dead, one badly hurt in twin accidents

One construction worker has died and another is fighting for his life after two separate accidents that happened within blocks and minutes of each other downtown on Thursday.

One worker was working on the 30th floor of the Three Harbour Green construction site near West Cordova and Thurlow streets just after 8 a.m. when he was hit by a form used for pouring concrete.

He was killed by the impact, said Donna Freeman, a spokesperson with WorkSafeBC.

“The second incident — and we’re not sure what happened first — took place at Canada Place,” Freeman said.

“The worker was working on the sails. We’re not sure what he was doing but he did sustain a fall of around 45 or 50 feet.”

The man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. His status was not known at press time.

Both workers were employed by the same Vancouver-based contractor, Ledcor.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Freeman said of the accidents happening so close in time and proximity.

“When the second report came in, we thought it was a repeat of the same one. It’s very unusual.”

Lee Coonfer, a spokesperson or Ledcor, called the accidents “unprecedented.”

The identities of the workers have not been released.

WorkSafeBC is investigating both accidents.
