One dead, Seven hurt in SUVs

A young person was killed and seven others ranging in age from 13 to 23 critically and seriously injured in two separate motor vehicle collisions, both involving SUVs striking trees yesterday morning.

At approximately 3:15 a.m., paramedics responded to a single-vehicle rollover at the intersection of Island Park Drive and the Ottawa River Parkway.

Police said the vehicle was travelling from the Quebec side of the inter-provincial bridge coming into Ontario. The vehicle went over a curb into a grassed median and collided with a large tree, where it flipped and caught fire, police said.

Four males were critically injured, including a 21-year-old with critical head and facial injuries and an open fracture to his right arm; a male in his 20s with critical head and facial injuries and injuries to his abdomen; a male in his 20s with critical head injuries and multiple fractures to his left leg and right shoulder and a male in his 20s with injuries to his abdomen and chest.
One of the victims later died in hospital.

Paramedics believe only one person in the vehicle was wearing their seatbelt.

At 8 a.m., four young teens were seriously injured after their SUV struck a tree at an unknown speed at the intersection of Resthaven and Woods in the Constance Bay area.

There were six people in the vehicle. While two people suffered minor injuries, three boys, ages 13, 15 and 16, suffered serious injuries while a 16-year-old girl is in stable condition.
Police are investigating the collisions.
