One man is dead after a late-night collision near Westlock Saturday.
Around 11:30 p.m., Westlock RCMP were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision involving a semi and a pick-up truck on Highway 18 and Range Road 271, west of Westlock.
RCMP investigators believe that a white 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck, being driven by a 25-year-old man from the Westlock area, was northbound on Range Road 271 and attempted to cross Highway 18. A 2007 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer, being driven by a 48-year-old Olds-area man, was heading eastbound on Highway 18.
The pickup is believed to have entered the highway without halting for the stop sign and crossed into the oncoming path of the semi-truck. Both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch of Highway 18.
The semi-tractor trailer was not loaded at the time of the collision, and there were no other passengers in either vehicle.
Emergency services attended, but the 25-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi escaped with no injuries, and both men were wearing their seatbelts.
The name of the deceased is being withheld until the next-of-kin can be notified.
The collision is still under investigation, but speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors and no charges are anticipated at this time.
