Ontario man charged in New Year's shooting

Police have charged a man who is believed to have shot an innocent bystander on New Year’s Eve, but are still looking for a suspect in a related homicide.

Police have charged a man who is believed to have shot an innocent bystander on New Year’s Eve, but are still looking for a suspect in a related homicide.

Just after 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, police responded to gunshots on 3 Street and 3 Avenue SW. Upon arrival, they found a man lying in the street with a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.

One block over, police found a second victim in a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. The man, who is in his early 30s, was taken to hospital and is currently in stable condition.

“He (the second victim) was totally unrelated to the previous incident,” said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus of the homicide unit. “He was in the process of getting into his vehicle and he was going to return and pick up some of his friends.”

Godwin Mawutor Bonney, 22, of Etobicoke, Ont., is now facing several charges, including attempted murder and possession of a weapon obtained by crime.

Investigators continue to look for the suspect in the homicide. They believe he is a black man between 20 and 30 years old whose hair is styled in cornrows.

Those with any information are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
