Ontario man killed in Highway 102 crash

A 73-year-old man died, a woman was seriously hurt and three others sustained injuries in a horrific two-car collision yesterday on Highway 102 at the Brookfield exit, police said.

Sgt. Al Affleck of Colchester County RCMP said paramedics, firefighters and police rushed to the fatal collision just after 1:30 p.m. He said it appears a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck crashed into the back of a Hyundai Accent, which ended up in a ditch.

A Kingston man who was behind the wheel of the Hyundai died at the scene, Affleck said, adding the female passenger was also badly injured. She was transported to Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro along with two adults and an infant who were also in the truck, he said.

Sgt. Affleck said the preliminary investigation shows both vehicles were in the same lane travelling north. Road conditions were fine at the time and alcohol wasn’t a factor in the crash, he added.

“We think that the car may have overshot the exit and slowed down,” he said of the Hyundai, but emphasized the cause hadn’t yet been determined.

The northbound lane was closed for four hours and traffic was backed up from Stewiacke to Shubenacadie.
