A 40-year-old teacher at a Scarborough elementary school is accused of sexual assaulting and sexual exploiting one of her former students.

The Toronto woman, who is accused of an “inappropriate relationship,” with the ex-pupil, was arrested around 7 p.m. Monday.

A complaint from the student to police sparked the probe.

Toronto police Det. Const. Amanda Thornton would not disclose the student’s gender or any details except that they are under age 18.

Mary Gowans and the student met at Joseph Howe Senior Public school on Winter Gardens Trail, police said. Students there are Grade 7 and 8.

The Toronto District School Board said Gowans is on “home assignment” while the investigation is ongoing.

Thornton said the complainant no longer goes to school at Joseph Howe.

“We’re open to any further witnesses that may come forward,” Thornton said.
