Open, airy and entertaining

High ceilings and an airy, bright, open feeling mark the Twickingham model home in Castlefields on Carruther’s Creek, the Ajax community located at Audley Road and Rossland Road East.

“It’s almost a very Californian feel,” said Brian Ellis, sales manager for Medallion Developments, which created the community. “The whole idea behind these homes is that they’re very grand. They’re built for very open concept living, for someone who does a lot of entertaining and somebody who wants something different than just the everyday mundane.”

The Twickingham sports 12-foot high ceilings on the main level to match the open layout, which Ellis said conveys the spaciousness of the home. “You don’t have a lot of vestibules or hallways that take up a lot of space in your home. The rooms are all huge and open to another.” He noted this is exemplified on the main floor, where just a three-sided fireplace and media niche separate the family room from the living room/dining room. A neutral, earth-tone colour palette fills the walls and furniture in the Twickingham, which Ellis said was a conscious choice to appeal to the Ajax market.

“Although these are built for entertaining … we’re still primarily selling it to families.

“They still like the calming effect of the earth tones and the more muted colours.

“The decor is modern, in a restricted way,” he said.

The scheme continues in the kitchen, with soft colours and natural wood cabinets.

“The trends now are painted cabinets and natural woods, as opposed to lacquers,” said Ellis. “The cabinetry colours were meant to blend in with the earth tones — the natural decor we’re trying to promote in this particular house.”
