Opponents to keep fighting trade centre

While the business community applauded Premier Darrell Dexter’s announcement of support for the proposed trade and convention centre, opposition to the project remains.

And The Coalition to Save the View spokesman Allan Robertson said they’re not giving up the fight.

“This is just the beginning,” he said.

“When you take all of the pay back to the province ... (including) extra sales tax, extra income tax, it works out to a net cost of about $6 million a year.”

On the other side of the fence, the business community inundated inboxes with press releases praising the government’s decision.

“Between the (new central) library and the convention centre, the province is showing some confidence in downtown (Halifax) and an understanding of how important downtown is in terms of the entire economic vitality of the province,” said Paul MacKinnon, president of the Downtown Halifax Business Commission.
