Bylaw could affect rental dwellings
An Oshawa bylaw that will force hundreds of college and university students out of rental houses in the city’s north end moved closer to fruition Monday night when the Development Services Committee voted it through to council for approval.
The proposal — which requires landlords to get a licence, imposes tougher housing standards and limits the number of bedrooms in a house — aims to resolve issues of noise, parking and irresponsible behaviour by tenants.
In its final draft, the bylaw limits bedrooms to four with no more than 40 per cent of the basement and main floor used for that purpose. Committee chair Louise Parkes called it "the toughest issue this council has faced in many years."
- If approved, the bylaw will take effect in May.
