Ottawa abandons plan to place student age cap on bus passes

OTTAWA - Ottawa city council has reversed a decision to impose a controversial age cap on student bus passes.

Student passes have been restricted to students age 27 and under since July 1, but council reversed the decision on Wednesday.

Students disputed an argument that 27 is the typical graduation age for a PhD student, noting Statistics Canada says the average is 33.

University and college students who packed the Wednesday council meeting applauded the reversal.

The city had said it would have saved $200,000 by next year if the cap was left at 27.

Erik Halliwell, a fourth-year law student at Carleton University, says students were feeling the pinch during the recession and “the age cap is wrong.”
