Ottawa gets EVOL for local movie

Ottawa audiences will get their first chance to see EVOL, an action movie filmed here by local filmmakers Pascal Aka and Andre Givogue, at the Mayfair Theatre this weekend.

This follows July’s sold-out screening at the Action on Film International Film Festival in Los Angeles, where EVOL, made for $6,000, beat some multi-million-dollar productions to win the Audience Choice award.

“You can make a big-budget movie or a low-budget movie but you can never, ever put a price on talent. You cannot put a price on passion,” said director Aka, “and when I see these martial artists perform, it’s like, oh, my God.”

Dennis Lafond stars in the film and co-ordinated those action scenes.

Producer Givogue said he’s hoping for a big hometown welcome at the screenings against stiff competition.

“We just want to get the local support and for everybody to show up,” he said. “We’re up against Harry Potter on Friday night.”

EVOL shows at the Mayfair Friday at 9 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m.
