The federal government has issued a tender call for companies interested in designing and building a new coast guard headquarters for the Maritimes.
Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea says the project is one of a series of moves designed to consolidate coast guard activities at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth.
The tender closes in January and a contract will be awarded shortly afterwards with construction completed by the summer of 2011.
The headquarters will be located at BIO and incorporate environmentally sustainable design features such as optimal use of sunlight exposure and recycled building materials.
A number of coast guard activities, including fleet operations, have already moved to BIO from the current Dartmouth base.
More than 160 coast guard employees currently working at two locations in Dartmouth will move to the new headquarters.
