The federal government has announced it will spend $21 million to replace the sails at Canada Place.

The iconic roof was first installed for Expo 86 and is due for a replacement. The outer roof fabric will be replaced with material of current technology, according to MP James Moore, minister of Canadian heritage and official languages.

“This is an important investment in a Canadian icon,” Mike Shardlow, president and CEO of Canada Place Corp., said in a release. “Canada Place’s ongoing financial and national contributions are particularly critical at this time, supporting the economy and representing Canada on the West Coast.”

The replacement will start after the Olympics and be complete by March 2011.

Funding for the announcement comes from the federal $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
