Ottawa pours $500K into transit emergency fund

The city is putting another half-million dollars into an emergency fund to cover transportation costs for agencies serving low-income residents, seniors and persons with disabilities.

The city is putting another half-million dollars into an emergency fund to cover transportation costs for agencies serving low-income residents, seniors and persons with disabilities.

The city announced a $200,000 fund on Jan. 9, but that ran out in about 10 days, said Coun. Diane Deans.

“Centres are finding that as word spreads that there is help available, more people turned to community resources centres for help, and the money won’t last as long as it did before.”

Since last week, the parties have held talks with federal mediators to keep lines open for a settlement, said Mayor Larry O’Brien.

O’Brien wouldn’t comment on the negotiations. “The parties have agreed to a media blackout,” he said.
