Ottawa should be riding up the Hill for cycling funding

Mayor Larry O’Brien and city councillors should hop on their bikes and race to Parliament Hill to claim federal infrastructure money for the Ottawa cycling plan. It’s badly needed, as council has left the cycling plan severely underfunded.

The City of Ottawa has been working on an official plan for cycling since 2003. In 2005, it called for a budget of $50 million over 20 years. By July 2008, after many delays and consultations, the city decided to cut the plan down to $26 million. Then in December, the final budget allotted less than 35 per cent of the money the cycling plan calls for.

You can sign an online petition aimed at city hall to promote cycling in Ottawa. The petition is found at www.CyclingVisionOttawa.ca.
