Recycling initiatives across the world often transform cooking oil into biodiesel, but how about converting oil into scented candles?
Portuguese recycling solutions outfit Oon has come up with the upcycling business of turning used oil from the fryer into fragrant candle wax.
The Candlemaker, a domestic appliance that looks more like a trendy coffee maker than anything else, filters the oil to remove odours and sediment; the purified oil is then mixed with a colorant to create the candle wax.
Mário Silva, the brains behind the concept, said his inspiration came from a restaurant, “a place where you can find many used oils and candles.”
But how many candles will you burn for a product priced at $279?
