Outrage over newborn baby found in Calgary dumpster

Calgarians became outraged after a newborn baby was found in a northwest garbage dumpster yesterday afternoon and brought to hospital in critical condition.

Police were called in around 1:20 p.m., when a trio of passersby reportedly heard cries and then made the chilling discovery in a townhouse complex’s common garbage dumpster.

“I’m not sure how the passersby were alerted to the baby, but they were, and noticed the baby in the trash,” Insp. Quinn Jacques said.

“It’s disgusting.”

Lorraine, a mother of three who wanted to withhold her last name, lives in the complex and said she’s shocked someone would leave a baby in a dumpster.

“That’s just sick. It’s really messed up. I hope they find whoever did that,” she said, adding the complex is usually quiet and friendly.

“There are a lot of families around here, but I don’t know anyone who was pregnant.”

Police continue to investigate, and are looking for the baby’s mother, but couldn’t confirm whether a woman brought to hospital the same day was connected.

The baby remains in hospital.
