Overcrowding at blood clinic

People will be turned away from the blood collection clinic at the Victoria General site starting next Tuesday.

Those getting blood tests will be sent to the Halifax Infirmary or the clinic at the Bayers Road Centre.

The clinic at the VG is becoming overcrowded. It was designed to serve 70 people a day who need their blood tests done the same day because of a hospital appointment.

“It’s a step we’ve had to take for health and safety reasons,” said Fran O’Brien, the administrative directory of Laboratory Services, in a statement yesterday.

“Unfortunately, the number of others dropping in from the local community has gradually grown to the point where wait times are longer and there is over-crowding in the clinic waiting area.”

She added there are fire-safety issues and they need to get back to focusing on the people the clinic was designed for.
