Owners, pets check out ‘long overdue’ playground

Dozens of dogs and their dog owners put their feet and paws to the ground over the weekend and enjoyed a brand new off-leash dog park deep in the city’s southeast.

Officially opened Saturday, the 11-hectare off-leash park situated between Auburn Bay and Mahogany in the southeast was inundated with dogs and the parking lot was almost full yesterday, but that didn’t deter Sasha Lacic from bringing her yellow Labrador Bella for a long walk in the park.

“Oh, I think this new park is beautiful and it’s nice to have one in the south. It’s nice to not have to drive too far to bring the dog out for a walk now,” Lacic said.

“I think we will get a lot of use out of this park.”

Other dog owners enjoyed their weekends at the new park playing catch with their canines, including Matt Lager, who drove from New Brighton to check out the new dog playground.

“It looks good so far, and the dogs seem to like it. I think it’s the perfect location,” he said.

Area Alderman Ric McIver said he was happy to see dozens of dogs already at the park before the official launch.

“It’s great to see the enthusiasm and nice to have so many people out already. I think this park has been long overdue,” McIver said, adding a partnership with the provincial government made the park possible.
