Spring means it’s time to hit the links, the courts and the fabulous outdoor paths in our great country. But if you haven’t done much physical activity all through the winter, it’s important to build up your activities gradually.
“Ensure gradual increase in training loads and progressions,” says Carl Petersen, a partner and director of high performance training at City Sports & Physiotherapy Clinics in Vancouver, B.C.
“Men are less flexible than women and therefore need to do a dynamic warmup prior to any activity,” he says. “Research shows that doing stretches after the activity and again before bed will give a 50 per cent decrease in lower extremity overuse injuries.”
