A dead body was discovered in the Bow River by the Louise Dean Bridge and Memorial Drive yesterday afternoon.
Oliver Leung and Tina Johnson were sitting by the riverbank having a conversation when they noticed something in the middle of the water.
“At first we didn’t believe it was a body because this is Calgary,” said Leung. “We thought it was some rocks and garbage left over by some rafters.”
Leung, a former lifeguard, waded out into the river and discovered that it was in fact a body.
“You can’t walk away from a situation like this,” said Leung. “It’s almost an obligation to the victim.”
The witnesses said they called 9-1-1 at this point and police and the fire department arrived within five minutes. Leung said the body appeared to be of a Caucasian man in his 30s, and that police told them it was not suspicious.
Calgary police Sgt. Frank Reuser said police are conducting their normal investigation into the case.
