Parents seek help locating missing ‘Growing Pains’ actor

The parents of actor Andrew Koenig, who is presumably missing in Vancouver, pleaded for help in finding their son yesterday.

Walter Koenig — who is best-known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series — said his son suffers from depression.

“I request even during these extraordinary times … if the population can take one more step and try to be aware that we have a son, Andrew Koenig, who is presently missing, who’s state of emotional health may not be very good,” said Walter.

Andrew, who played Boner on the TV show Growing Pains, was reported missing on Feb. 16, but was last seen in Toronto on Feb. 14.

When asked if his son was suicidal, Walter said, “It’s almost impossible not to explore that possibility … and it is certainly something that has tortured (him).”

He added that Andrew stopped taking his anti-depressants about a year ago and started selling off all of his possessions.

“Our son has always found (Vancouver) to be at least a second home, if not actually a first home for him,” Walter said.

Vancouver police Const. Tim Fanning said the hundreds of Olympic security cameras installed around the city probably can’t do much in the search.

“Sometimes video surveillance can help us, but with this many people I would say it’s closer to a hindrance.”
