Park board looks at hour cuts

Vancouver’s park board may have to reduce the hours of community centres and pools — even close them on certain days — to meet a budget shortfall of $1.9 million, commissioner Ian Robertson said yesterday.

The lone Non-Partisan Association commissioner said city council is trimming the park’s budget by $1.9 million and directing parks commissioners to increase revenue by $1.7 million. He blamed the Vision-COPE dominated park board for not advocating for the budget.

“They have been silent,” said Robertson yesterday. “Vision and COPE are letting council cut away critical funds without a peep of protest.”

He warned that the board might have to cut services, or reduce the operating hours of community centres and pools.
