Park catering to bookworms

Victoria Park, that much-overlooked venue at the top of Spring Garden Road, is seeing a lot of action this year.

First the Busker Festival installed a stage there this summer, and now on Sunday the Word on the Street festival is moving there from its usual spot in the Cunard Centre.

“It’s kind of a new site for outdoor venues,” said Sean Williams, an organizer with the Word on the Street festival. “It’s starting to pick up in the sense of a place to hold an outside event.”

Victoria Park has been a venue for lunch-time concerts and car shows for years, but organizers of bigger events are starting to take notice, said Bernard Smith with the Spring Garden Area Business Association.

It’s also extremely fitting for this particular venue since the statue of poet Robbie Burns will stand looking over all the book lovers.

And while the forecast is calling for a chance of rain, the books (and book lovers) will stay dry under the tents.

An average of 30,000 people attend the annual event.
