A Vancouver police officer killed in the line of duty in 1987 will be honoured and remembered today.
The community-designed and community-built playground will be dedicated in Larry Young's name at 3 p.m. Volunteers from the community and the police department with the My Own Backyard Association will build the playground at E.11th Avenue and Commercial Drive.
Sergeant Larry Young, who grew up in East Vancouver, was shot and killed Feb. 2, 1987, as a member of the Vancouver Police Emergency Response Team assisting with a high-risk arrest. He is the last Vancouver Police officer to die in the line of duty.
Completion of the project will result in a community-designed play space that enhances the existing green space and provides an opportunity for residents to play and interact with each other. The increased foot traffic and sense of ownership over the space will also increase neighborhood safety.
My Own Backyard Association works to improve the safety and self-reliance of its neighborhood through its membership, public education activities, and community interactions. The creation of the playground is the partnership of MOBY, the City of Vancouver, MOSAIC, and Whole Foods Market.
