Parking spot ranks high on many shoppers’ wishlists

Last minute shoppers will have more to worry about than finding the perfect gift amongst fellow shoppers as parking has been a problem at some city malls.

Samantha Rogen spent a half hour circling the Southcentre Mall parking lot looking for a spot yesterday afternoon and that was after a 20-minute search at Market Mall on Saturday.

“I’m not sure what it is this year, but it seems like there is less parking. But I suppose it could just be because this mall is busier this year. I really don’t know,” she said after completing her search.

“But it has to be done. I would almost take a day off and come during the day if I thought it might be easier to park.”

A quick survey at Southcentre found most motorists spent more than 10 minutes looking for a spot, but shoppers at Chinook Centre seemed to have better luck.

Mark Fletcher said he and his family found a spot within five minutes.

“I think we must have fluked out because there were people pulling out when we were pulling in,” he said.

Parking traffic attendants in the lots were too busy to comment to Metro but said they have been “steady.”
